 Help from the community

Hi all,
I'd really love some help from the community here.
My partner grew up without ever knowing who his dad is - and in turn out kids will not know who their grandfather is.
My partner attempted to ask once as a kid but she didn't tell him anything other than that his first name is peter but it's been so long he's not sure if he remembers that right.
He's asked her again and she has just said "I don't want to talk about it".
I asked before on behalf of my kids and got the same answer "don't want to talk about it".
How do we find anything out? I think he deserves to know.
There are no family members left alive - uncles and grandmother have passed, but when he asked them they said they didn't know either, that they didn't even know she was pregnant until he was born (8 weeks premature).
Allegedly there was a hearing for maintainance when he was a baby, is there a way to access these records?
We did a dna test on ancestry dna but only came up with a few 4th / 5th cousins who are unlikely to be able to say where the connection would lie.
I've tried contact a private detective but they said we don't have enough info.
Obviously going down the legal route would finish their already fragile relationship and her health isn't well.
I don't want her to pass away without telling him who his dad is / who my kids grandad is.
